Georgia Department of Revenue Extends Relief to Hurricane and Storm Victims
On September 9, 2011, the Georgia Department of Revenue (DOR) announced certain tax relief provisions to the victims of Hurricane/Tropical Storm Irene.
Coinciding with certain IRS provisions, the DOR is postponing until October 31, 2011, certain deadlines for individuals who reside, and businesses whose principal place of business is located, in areas which have been affected by the disaster.
In addition to the tax return filing relief, the DOR is also following the one-week extension announced for taxpayers whose preparers were affected by Hurricane Irene. (This postponement does not apply to International Fuel Tax Agreement reports.)
Taxpayers who reside in or have a business located in the following areas will qualify for the relief: New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, and Puerto Rico. (Additional areas will be added as identified by the IRS.)
The relief also applies to taxpayers not in the disaster area but whose records are located in the disaster area. In addition, certain relief workers may also be entitled to relief.
Special rules apply to paper filing and affected taxpayers should review theDOR website or contact or DOR Headquarters in Atlanta at 1-877-423-6711 for further guidance.
