Nanette Lee Miller, Modern Family & LGBT Services Group Co-Leader, Interviewed by KGO Radio, "Supreme Court Ruling Legalizing Same Sex Marriage May Affect Nation's Taxes."
The Supreme Court's decision to legalize same sex marriage could make an impact in the nation's economy because of the shifted tax consequences.
Nanette Lee Miller is with Marcum's Modern Family, an LGBTQ practice group in San Francisco. She said, "they get to file their taxes if they're married just like every other couple in America. There's no differences, but also it means that for state tax purposes, it will be easier transfers of debt to the spouse with no taxes. And for social security, all those issues about having to be in a state that recognizes same sex marriage to be able to get your spouse's go away."
She said that the decision will make costs go up for employers because more beneficiaries will be added to health care policies.
