South Florida accountants said the federal government shutdown is affecting the ability to resolve some matters with the IRS.
The Marcum firm sent out a newsletter on Wednesday saying tax refunds will not be issued during the shutdown and refund trackin is not available, for example.
Shaun Blogg, partner-in-charge of Marcum’s West Palm Beach office, said the firm has responded to many clients that we are not able to resolve issues with the IRS because of the shutdown.
Thousands of IRS employees have been furloughed and the IRS is maintaining core functions only, but tax filing deadlines remain the same and payments are still due, according to Marcum.
The IRS audit functions and examination of returns has also stopped.
The firm said clients who are in the midst of closing IRS examinations will now have to wait for final determinations, during which time interest will continue to accumulate.
