Taxpayers Beware of Phishing Attempts for IRS and State Payments
PHISHING: In electronic communication – an attempt to acquire information and/or money by obtaining usernames, passwords, bank accounts and credit card details by masquerading as a trustworthy entity.
Today, September 17, 2012, is the filing deadline for many IRS and State tax returns and estimated tax payments. Taxpayers should be aware of phishing emails from agencies disguising themselves as the IRS or other state agency in an attempt to obtain banking or other information.
The IRS (or any state) will NEVER request this information through an email and it is likely the IRS does not have this information.
If you receive such an email and are unsure of the sender, we suggest that you DO NOT OPEN the email and call your Marcum Tax Advisor for support.
