Ah, Summer! Time to Re-Group and Re-Charge
I started writing this column on January 4 and haven't missed a Friday since. This weekly posting was conceived as a way of increasing Marcum's and my engagement in social media (our marketing people tell me that's a good thing) and also of connecting on a regular basis with our clients, staff and friends (I know for sure that's a good thing).
When I came up with the plan, I approached our staff public relations director, Julie Gross Gelfand, who thought it was a great idea for Marcum and for me, and agreed to take on the additional responsibility of editing the column on a weekly basis. For that I thank and congratulate her because if you saw the first drafts of many of these postings…
State of the Firm - Taking It on the Road Marcum LLP | Accountants and Advisors | New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, California and Florida Certified Public Accountants
State of the Firm - Taking It on the Road
Over the last month or so, I've traveled to Marcum's six operating U.S. regions to conduct State of the Firm meetings - our version of town hall gatherings for all of our employees. Joining me on this road trip were Greg Giugliano, our firmwide Partner-in-Charge of Assurance Services, and Joe Perry, our firmwide Partner-in-Charge of Tax Services. Greg, Joe & I were able to interact with virtually everyone in every U.S. location who works for Marcum LLP or one of our affiliated companies.
For me especially, this was a tremendous experience. When I started at Marcum 32 years ago, it was a much different place. There were six people in the Firm at the time; I was number seven. And then we started to grow. By 1995, we were a 40-person, one-office firm located on Long Island, NY. In 1996, we opened a second office in New York City and continued to grow the business. We remained a two-office firm until 2008, with about 500 people, when we expanded into New Jersey. Up to that point - and I'm not exaggerating when I say this - I knew the majority, if not everyone, by their first names. Then came South Florida, Philadelphia, New England and California. Today, we are 1,200 strong in 16 domestic and five international markets. And I must admit, I no longer know everyone personally, and many don't have firsthand knowledge of me either. A lot of Marcum people know only what goes on within the four walls where they work each day. This is one of the challenges of growth. Through no fault of their own, a lot of people on the expanding Marcum team haven't been able to develop a clear sense of the Firm as a whole, who we are, what we do and where we are headed.

Fast and Not So Furious: Notes from a Frequent Flier
This was one of those weeks when I traveled Monday through Friday, which meant four nights away from home and three different hotels. As I write this, I'm on a plane from San Francisco to New York.
I've been traveling for business for as long as I can remember. Whether for clients, professional conferences and seminars, or visiting Marcum's many offices, I've been on the road and in the air for much of the last 30 years. These days, I wind up on planes an average of twice per month, to places like L.A., Miami, San Francisco, Boston, Las Vegas, Chicago and London. They are all very nice cities with excellent hotels, restaurants, and cultural and sporting events. Due to the generosity of some clients and the modern miracle of frequent flier miles, I'm usually able to upgrade my long haul flights. Trust me, that's a far cry from the early days of my career working for a "big eight" accounting firm, when I spent weeks on end performing audits of public companies, sometimes in places so small I'm not sure they even had names.
Ferris Bueller's Day Off Marcum LLP | Accountants and Advisors | New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, California and Florida Certified Public Accountants
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
It's June, and that means one thing. Graduation. A rite of passage and occasion for celebrating like no other. But once all the mortar boards come back down to earth and the young people who tossed them skyward come down from the high of having finally made it through four years or more of schooling, a cold sober reality awaits.
A great many of them will be starting their adulthoods deep in debt. Whether they are high school graduates about to enter college, or post-secondary graduates striving to enter the workforce, student loans are about to become a crushing economic force in their lives. And it is a force with the power of rushing water. There's no holding it back, and the specter of drowning is real.
