Best of the Best
Yesterday was the 2nd Annual Marcum MicroCap Conference, which was held at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York City. Since last year's inaugural conference was such a resounding success for all involved, we decided to do it again.
The conference was the brainchild of David Bukzin, Partner-in-Charge of Marcum's SEC Practice Group, which he started for the Firm in 1998. Under David's leadership, our SEC practice has grown to become one of the top ten auditors of SEC registrants in the country. The MicroCap Conference was part of the natural evolutionary development of our SEC practice and highlights the entrepreneurial qualities of Marcum at its best.

Remembering on Memorial Day
The calendar says Memorial Day is the last Monday in May. Most people think of it as the unofficial start of summer, a three-day weekend (yahoo!) and the chance to fire up the barbeque for the first time since winter. For those of us who work at Marcum, Memorial Day is actually the first holiday since New Year's when our offices are closed. Due to the seasonal nature of our business, we don't close for any of the earlier national holidays, such as Martin Luther King Day or President's Day. So, most of us really look forward to Memorial Day, and many use the opportunity to add Friday to the mix to make it a four-day weekend.
Mentoring Mission Marcum LLP | Accountants and Advisors | New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, California and Florida Certified Public Accountants
My partner David Bukzin, who heads up Marcum's SEC practice, received a wonderful honor this week. On Wednesday, he was the honoree for Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City's 2013 Accountants & Bankers Reception. BBBS is the biggest organization in the country dedicated to mentoring. They have a range of different kinds of mentoring programs, all aimed at helping underserved teens and young adults, including one that matches young people with business men and women to help them build a foundation for future professional success.
Mentoring is one of the most profound ways that an accomplished person can help someone still on his or her way up. A good mentor serves as your private sounding board and personal advisor. Someone who can vet your ideas in their earliest stages of formation, before you feel confident enough to float them publicly, and who can provide constructive professional guidance based on their own experiences and achievements. Someone who can help you get where you want to go.
Happy Mother's Day Marcum LLP | Accountants and Advisors | New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, California and Florida Certified Public Accountants
Happy Mother's Day
It's Mother's Day weekend. In my family, we tend to turn birthdays and holidays into extended celebrations. Mother's Day is no exception.
My wife Tracy's family has a Mother's Day tradition that has lasted for decades. Since we've been married, it's become my tradition, too.
Tracy is one of six girls, and beyond her immediate family, she has dozens of first cousins as well as some cousins I'm not sure are actually relatives. For the last 35 years or so, the entire extended family -- aunts, uncles, cousins and now the cousin's children – have gathered every Mother's Day weekend at the Glen Falls House in Round Top, NY. Round Top is in the upstate New York Catskills region, and as for the Glen Falls House, picture the Dirty Dancing hotel, minus some of the glamour. So three generations, 50-70 of us in total depending on the year, spend Mother's Day weekend together upstate.

Healthcare Costs Can Make You Sick
I know it's almost a month away, but I am already dreading June 1. That's the date that Marcum's health insurance contract renews annually, and every year I'm dumbfounded by how much our health insurance premiums are increasing. This year is no exception. We just finished our annual review process and, needless to say, I'm not happy.
In an almost zero-inflation environment, our health insurance cost, before plan modifications and employee contributions, will be going up by 15%. Fifteen percent!
I know we're not the only company going through this, but it staggers me, nonetheless. And it seems no matter what we do, prices just keep going up, year after year, with very little recourse for businesses like ours. I'm sure many of you feel the same way.
