Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

The holidays are upon us again. I don’t know how that happens so fast – it seems like just a few weeks ago that I was writing my last holiday message to wish you all well in the approaching New Year and to briefly reflect on the year just ended.

I am happy to say that 2014 was another rewarding year for Marcum, one in which we were privileged to continue partnering with our clients to help them – you – achieve their business and personal goals. We continued growing our service offering and our talent pool while deepening our geographic presence in key markets, to ensure that we stay relevant to our clients’ evolving needs. Following significant growth in 2013, which was underscored by strategic mergers in New York, Boston and Southern California, 2014 brought additional growth with the addition of two outstanding firms in New England. Our partnership ranks also expanded in several Marcum offices, punctuated by new leadership in our South Florida, Philadelphia and California regions. It has been very gratifying to see how these investments have immediately paid dividends not only in terms of additional expertise and expanded accessibility for our clients, but also in the way they have already contributed to our corporate culture.

Like most companies, Marcum celebrates the holiday season with parties for partners and staff. Every Marcum office or region plans their own shindig. And while I can’t personally attend them all, I did make it to the parties for our New York City and Melville, Long Island, offices this week. As is typical for us, in addition to local partners and staff, the parties were also attended by Marcum people from other offices who happened to be in town for meetings or training, a couple of hundred people in all at each event. In both cases, I was struck by the energy and enthusiasm in the room, the genuine camaraderie and easy melding of teams that are to some degree still rather new to each other. It was a poignant reminder that the good will of good people is essential to good business. It makes me very proud of what we have accomplished for our clients and our firm, and it makes me excited about what 2015 will bring.

The New Year is more than a time of new beginnings; it is also a time of learning from the past in order to make sound decisions about what comes next. Circumstances continually change – from the local economy to the world stage. The challenge is to be nimble, to adapt as needed, to do things better and smarter, and not to be complacent or to repeat history just because something has worked until now. The wheel can always be a little rounder.

Thank you for the confidence you have placed in Marcum to be part of your success. We are grateful for your trust, your friendship and your business.

My partners, staff and I wish you, your families and your businesses a successful, happy and healthy 2015.

Note: This column will be on hiatus through the holidays. Please look for my next posting on January 9.
