Beware of Email Scams Claiming to be from the IRS

The IRS has issued an alert for a currently-circulating spam email that indicates an IRS payment has been rejected. The email looks like official IRS email because the sender's email address ends in @irs.gov. However, please be aware the IRS will never initiate taxpayer communications through email. Already, many Marcum clients have received this email.

The following page on the IRS website provides excellent instructions on what to do if you do receive such an email:

http://www.irs.gov/privacy/article/0,,id=179820,00.html

You will find the guidance advises not to open any attachments but to instead forward the email, as-is, to the IRS at phishing@irs.gov. The IRS will then take any action available to them to eliminate these spam email messages.

If you have any questions about any questionable emails, please feel free to contact your Marcum Tax Professional.

A special thanks to Tax Flash contributor Michael Brady.
