Tax Flash - Internal Revenue Service, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and New Jersey Extend Filing Deadlines to May 11th By Eugene Ruvere, Tax & Business Services
The Internal Revenue Service extended the deadline for certain personal income tax requirements to May 11, 2010 for taxpayers in federal disaster areas created by the recent floods. The IRS extension applies to:
All of Rhode Island, with the exception of Bristol County; and
The Massachusetts counties of Bristol, Essex, Middlesex, Norfolk, Plymouth, Suffolk and Worcester; and
The New Jersey counties of Atlantic, Bergen, Cape May, Essex, Gloucester, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Passaic, Somerset and Union.
The IRS extension covers the following filing requirements:
Individual income tax returns;
Quarterly estimated tax payments that are normally due on April 15th; and
Contributions that a taxpayer may make to an IRA eligible for a 2009 filing.
In addition to the above, casualty losses incurred due to the recent storms may be deducted on either the 2009 or 2010 returns at the option of the taxpayer.
The Rhode Island Division of Taxation has also provided for an extension for filing of state personal income tax returns and moves the deadline to May 11, 2010. However, the Rhode Island state extension covers all counties in Rhode Island, including Bristol.
The extensions provided by the Massachusetts Department of Revenue and the New Jersey Division of Taxation covers the same counties as the IRS extension and provides for the same adjusted due date.
