About John

John Bonk serves as the Firm’s national state and local tax (SALT) practice leader. He has 15 years of experience in public accounting, assisting clients with multistate tax issues.

John works with clients in a wide array of industries, including private equity, technology, manufacturing, wholesale distribution, real estate, transportation, and healthcare. Additionally, he provides consulting related to the complex state tax issues that relate to cryptocurrencies and non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

He is primarily focused on income tax as well as sales and use tax issues; he also has experience with state and local indirect and direct taxation. John has consulted on significant state tax issues in all of the largest states in the country and many of the smaller states as well.

John is experienced in state tax due diligence, voluntary disclosure agreements, domestic restructurings, nexus analysis, taxability analysis, state audit support, and financial audit support.

He has significant transactional experience with private equity and special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) acquirers and sellers. He is the lead state tax professional on both buy- and sell-side tax due diligence engagements and delivers state tax structuring advice for mergers and acquisitions. This experience includes domestic and cross-border targets with U.S. operations or customers.
