ABOUT THE CLIENT
With headquarters in New York and locations across the United States, the company provides delivery services to all major cities in the United States and internationally. They are a full-service logistics company providing warehousing for “final mile deliveries,” domestically and overseas.
THE CHALLENGE/GOAL
The company needed to gather monthly revenues per customer per division for 2017 to 2019. The problem was the data for each division was spread out over approximately 14 different enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems with no easy way to aggregate it. They needed the data in a format that was easy-to-read and understand—and they were up against a tight deadline.
THE PROCESS
The source data varied from simple Excel spreadsheets generated from current technology systems to complex, multi-file fixed-width formats generated from older mainframe systems. Marcum worked with our client to determine a common format for the revenue data. Next, Marcum collaborated with the seven different data owners in the various divisions to extract data from their systems. Because time was of the essence, Marcum’s only request of the client was to deliver the data fields in whatever format they could. Using macros and other data transformation techniques, Marcum successfully aggregated the data into a common data format, per the client’s specifications. Throughout the engagement, Marcum professionals worked hand-in-hand with the client to perform quality assurance on the data set to ensure it matched with the underlying financial statements.
