Talent Magnet
A great culture is a must-have in attracting top talent in today’s business environment. That is why it was so gratifying to see that Marcum was again recognized as one of the top accounting firms in the nation in Vault’s 2024 Accounting 25 rankings. We not only held our position at number 13 in the overall ranking but saw our ranking in the “Prestige” category rise to number 13. We also maintained our position in the Diversity, Practice Area and Quality of Life categories. 13 must be our lucky number as Accounting Today ranked us as the 13th largest accounting firm in the country in their most recent rankings.
As a leader, it’s been imperative to me that we maintain our close-knit, entrepreneurial culture as we’ve scaled our firm to more than 4,000 employees—and third-party recognition like this offers valuable feedback on how well we’re doing. Beyond that, the improved ranking in the Prestige category is one of many indicators that awareness of the employee experience at Marcum is spreading far beyond the walls of our firm. The Vault ranking is based on an anonymous survey of accounting professionals based on what matters most to them.
Given how quickly the world of work has changed, we strive every day to make sure that our culture is evolving in a way that allows us to attract the best and brightest in every practice area. Our commitments to flexible work and diversity, equity, and inclusion have helped us ensure people genuinely feel welcome once they come on board with Marcum.
These aren’t just policies in an HR handbook. They’re what we live every day. Every team member, from our practice group leaders to our front-line support staff, helps us advance those commitments through the daily decisions they make and how they show up for their teams and our clients.
Like many leaders, I give a lot of thought to how the pandemic and the back-to-work period have shaped what potential team members seek when they apply for jobs in professional services and what our existing professionals and support staff value when deciding if they want to continue building their careers here. While trends come and go, many in the accounting field still want what they’ve always valued: a stimulating work environment, a place where they are challenged, and with many opportunities to learn, collaborate with co-workers, advance in their careers and grow as professionals while earning a living. That’s not to say any employers in our highly competitive field can rest on their laurels. There is always more we can do to deliver a great employee experience, and fortunately, we have a very able team making sure we stay on the cutting edge.
From my point of view, this is well worth all of the hard work that goes into it. One of the highlights of visiting our many offices this year has been hearing the impassioned, impromptu conversations that are springing up in our hallways and break rooms among professionals who care deeply about the work we do—because it’s also their life’s work—and the firmwide innovation that has resulted. One-plus-one truly equals three when you bring great people together under one roof and give them the resources they need to knock it out of the park for clients. As we’ve expanded our footprint, I’m looking forward to that happening even more.
