Marcum Workplace Challenge Highlighted in Long Island Business News Article, "LI Firms Play Ball to Boost Camaraderie, Morale."

Studies have linked workplace-based sporting activities to better teamwork, higher morale, increased corporate loyalty and, as a result, heightened production. Many organizations have even seen rosier bottom lines thanks to work-related sports, especially when the activities involve other businesses.
Marcum LLP’s Melville office, for instance, hosts the annual Marcum Workplace Challenge, a 3.5-mile run for charity, and the accounting firm has made many business connections through the event, according to Melville partner-in-charge Carolyn Mazzenga. The yearly run routinely attracts 200 Long Island companies and 11,000 individuals to Jones Beach.
“You have all of these companies in one spot,” she said. “The race acts as an icebreaker, giving you the opportunity to talk with clients or anyone at all.”
That’s in addition to the real benefit – supporting charity. Since Marcum took over the annual event from JPMorgan Chase in 2005, participating companies have raised almost $400,000 for Long Island Cares, the Long Island Children’s Museum and the Children’s Medical Fund of New York.
Arranging the annual event is a major commitment; indeed, assuming responsibility for any extracurricular athletic endeavor, on top of other work demands, can be time-consuming.
