About Trey

Trey Stevens serves as the National Valuation, Forensics, and Litigation Services (VFLS) Quality Control director for Marcum. In this role, he monitors and updates the Firm’s national QC policies, procedures and standards, including client acceptance, workflow, and quality control on an ongoing basis in conjunction with national service line leadership. Mr. Stevens serves as the quality control reviewer for reports and is the national peer reviewer of valuations performed by Marcum professionals.

Mr. Stevens is the valuation dispute resolution decision maker and serves on the Firm’s internal ESOP fairness opinion committee as well as the VFLS Advisory Council. Mr. Stevens has over 30 years of experience in the valuation of business entities and business interests, the valuation of intangible assets and intellectual property, and the calculation of lost profits and commercial damages.

Mr. Stevens performs business enterprise and fractional interest valuations; intangible asset and intellectual property valuations; goodwill impairment testing; restricted stock valuations; option and warrant valuations; professional practice valuations; reasonableness of compensation; litigation support; and the determination of lost profits and economic damages.

His experience is in the context of transaction pricing and structuring (merger, acquisition, liquidation, and divestiture); taxation planning and compliance (federal income, gift, and estate tax; property tax); financial reporting; dissenters’ rights proceedings; bankruptcy; fraudulent conveyance; marital dissolutions; probate proceedings; regulatory compliance; buy-sell agreements; strategic planning; financing securitization and collateralization; employee stock ownership plans; and litigation support and dispute resolution.

Mr. Stevens has provided expert witness testimony for deposition, arbitration, and trial. These litigations related to business valuation matters and economic damages matters. He has been retained as an expert witness in the following types of litigations: bankruptcy, breach of contract, dissenters’ rights, economic damages, marital dissolution, probate, property tax, trade secrets, and reasonableness of compensation.

Mr. Stevens served as vice-chair of the American Society of Appraisers (ASA) International Board of Examiners from 2009 to 2015. In this role, he was responsible for approving business valuation candidates for accreditation by the ASA. From 2017-2022, Mr. Stevens served as chair of the ASA International Board of Examiners and is currently an advisor. He has been a course developer and instructor for several business valuation courses and is currently a member of the ASA Business Valuation Education Subcommittee and the International Institute of Business Valuers Education Committee.

Prior to joining Marcum, Mr. Stevens established and led a boutique business valuation firm. Earlier in his career, he was a principal with a leading business valuation, forensic analysis, and transaction financial advisory services firm as well as a practice leader in the business valuation group of a top tier accounting and advisory firm.
