Marcum LLP Establishes Diversity Scholarship Fund for Underrepresented Students Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

APRIL 12, 2022 (New York City, NY) – Marcum LLP announced today that it has established a college scholarship fund to support the career-track education of accounting majors from underrepresented groups.

The Marcum Diversity Scholarship Fund is an initiative of the Firm’s Diversity, Equity & Inclusion program. It was created to help build a diverse pipeline of future accountants, as a means of addressing the scarcity of minority CPAs in the United States, particularly in the Black and Latino communities.

Each scholarship recipient will receive a one-time $5000 grant for one academic year. In addition to the financial support, recipients will have internship opportunities, mentoring, and access to Marcum’s Associate Resource Groups and other Firm assets.

About the Scholarship

Marcum’s diversity scholarship program was piloted in the fall of 2021 at selected universities in the MidAtlantic region. Initial funding was awarded to four African American accounting majors attending Rutgers-Camden, Lincoln University, and Morgan State University. The four scholarship recipients will perform internships at Marcum’s Washington, DC and Philadelphia offices in the 2022-2023 academic year.

The diversity scholarship program is now rolling out to other Marcum regions. Marcum offices in California and Illinois will be the next to fund awards.

Criteria

Marcum works collaboratively with partner universities to select scholarship recipients. To be eligible, students must:

  • Be a full-time undergraduate sophomore or junior accounting student.
  • Have declared Accounting as their major.
  • Maintain an overall GPA of at least 3.0.
  • Be involved in at least one extracurricular activity.
  • Have not accepted full-time employment at another accounting firm.

“We felt that combining financial support with practical work experience and professional mentoring would deliver the greatest value to the students,” said Rachael Gibson, Marcum’s director of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion. “Supporting the education of our industry’s future professionals is the most direct way we can affect change and cultivate the next generation of accounting leaders. For all of the discussion around diversifying our profession and encouraging more talented young people to pursue careers in accounting, Marcum is literally putting our resources where our mouth is.”
